Gavasheli O Toktogul hydro power plant is the largest hydro power plant in Kyrgyz Republic and one of the largest in Central Asia. It consists of 4 x 300MW Francis units and is supplied from a water reservoir with a total capacity of 19,5bln m3 capacity and a water surface of 285km2.
The Kyrgyz Republic possesses tremendous hydropower potential, up to 142 billion kWh. Hydropower accounts for nearly 90 percent of electricity produced in the Kyrgyz Republic, but this installed capacity only represents about 10 percent of the country’s hydropower potential.
The reservoir currently receives 246 cubic meters of water per second and releases 488 cubic meters per second. Despite this year’s higher water levels, Kyrgyzstan continues to face electricity shortages, according to Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibrayev.
